James Graham, MD, is a highly experienced family physician with more than 47 years of continuous service in rural healthcare at Fairfax Community Hospital. He began his career there through a two-year manpower placement program, but what was intended as a short-term commitment became a lifelong vocation. Over nearly five decades, he has remained devoted to the same community, building an enduring legacy of accessible, relationship-based family medicine. Today, he continues to serve as both a practicing physician and Medical Director, where he oversees clinical operations, supports provider teams, and remains actively engaged in direct patient care.

As Medical Director, Dr. Graham plays a central role in guiding the hospital’s clinical services and sustaining high-quality care in a rural setting. His leadership has helped stabilize and grow healthcare delivery in an environment often challenged by limited resources and access barriers. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he and his wife operate a monthly Hands Free Health Clinic, an outreach effort designed to provide essential medical services to individuals who might otherwise go without care. His work reflects a long-standing commitment to both clinical excellence and community service.

Dr. Graham’s dedication to medicine is deeply personal. At age 16, he learned hemodialysis in order to care for his mother at home, an experience that profoundly shaped his understanding of responsibility, compassion, and patient-centered care. His remarkable life and career have recently been highlighted in an HBO documentary, Country Doc, which chronicles his decades of service and the broader story of rural healthcare survival and resilience. The film also explores the hospital’s transformation from a small 20-bed facility at risk of closure into a thriving institution that has since expanded significantly.

Despite facing extraordinary personal health challenges—including two kidney transplants, open-heart surgery, and bilateral foot amputations requiring prosthetic support—Dr. Graham has continued practicing medicine with unwavering dedication. His perseverance and commitment have made him not only a cornerstone of his hospital, but also a symbol of resilience in rural medicine. He remains driven by a deep belief in serving others, continuing to practice because of his enduring passion for caring for patients and supporting the health of his community.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about what I do is the opportunity to reach many people, especially in my situation working in rural Oklahoma. It's the folks that can't help themselves in a lot of situations that I focus on. I take pride in taking care of the indigent. I take pride in being calm, with the kindness and love that I can give them. I'm also a Christian physician, so I try to teach them about religion and have them spiritually ready for death as well. My wife and I run a Hands Free Health Clinic once a month, and we enjoy seeing those people that can't help themselves.
