Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most is being at the bedside where my day moves with the patients I interact with. Each patient brings totally different issues and challenges, and that variety keeps me going. The patients keep you going, even when you're tired. It's about working with each individual - whether it's the total knee replacement patient dealing with VA medication issues or helping families navigate difficult conversations about palliative care and hospice. I appreciate every person I work with throughout the day, from Fred who cleans the rooms to Dr. Palazzo, the head of the Department of Surgery. You need every one of your buddies to get through the day. I've started thanking people for the good deeds they've done and the good deeds they're going to do, and it's amazing how that nanosecond moment matters. At the end of the day, I ask myself: did you do the best you could today? And that's important.
