Heather Arnold, RN, BSN

Registered Nurse

Bradford, RI

Heather Arnold, BSN, RN, is a compassionate and resilient nurse with over 31 years of experience in healthcare, including the past two years dedicated to substance use disorder treatment at Behavioral Health Group. In her dual role as a home health and medication nurse within a methadone clinic, Heather provides far more than clinical care—she supports approximately 200 patients on their recovery journeys by helping them access housing, food, healthcare, and essential social services. Known for her deeply patient-centered approach, she prioritizes listening, building trust, and treating every individual with dignity, creating a safe and supportive environment for healing.

Heather’s path into nursing began at just 19 years old as a CNA and medical assistant, followed by work as an emergency department technician. Her journey was temporarily put on hold when her infant daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer, requiring Heather to step away from school to provide full-time care. Years later, after her daughter’s recovery, Heather returned to pursue her passion—earning her Associate Degree in Nursing from New England Institute of Technology in 2016 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2018 while working overnight shifts. She spent much of her career in geriatric care at an assisted living facility, building a strong foundation in long-term, relationship-based care before transitioning into her current role.

What began as an unexpected career shift following knee replacement surgery quickly became Heather’s true calling. In the substance use treatment setting, she has formed meaningful, life-changing connections with her patients—many of whom credit her with saving their lives. Whether she’s celebrating milestones like a first clean drug screen, creating snack packs for those in need, or simply sharing a moment of laughter at the dosing window, Heather brings empathy, encouragement, and humanity into every interaction. Her work is rooted in the belief that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and valued, and she continues to make a profound impact by meeting patients where they are and walking alongside them toward recovery.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I love caring for people and taking care of them. I like making people happy and giving them the best quality of life they can have while they're in this world, on their journey through whatever obstacles they have. I feel like we're all on a journey, but it's all different - all our journeys are different, we all have different paths and different obstacles. I just like to take care of people and make sure they're okay. I can't even help it - like when my friend had surgery, I was over there sleeping over, and they're like 'you don't have to be here,' and I'm like 'I gotta take care of you, that's what I do.' I just want to make people's lives better if I can, as long as they're here. Whatever little bit I can do for them makes me happy. And if I see it changing them or helping them in any way, then I know I did something, I know I did something good. At the clinic, I got to know the patients more and more, checking in with them every day about their doctor's appointments, making little snack packs for people who didn't have food or were losing too much weight. I ended up becoming really passionate about that job and taking care of them. They showed their gratitude by giving me little things - one girl gave me a card that says 'you saved my life,' another gave me a card saying 'you make my mornings about recovery again.' Just feeling like I make a difference, even seeing it change them, makes it all worthwhile.
