Dr. Gwanmesia is the award-winning, best-selling author of 'The Power of Your Identity,' a book created as a tool for parents and teachers to help children understand and embrace differences. The book was inspired by her daughter's experience in high school, when she refused to take food to school because she spent her lunch time explaining what she was eating to peers who found her Cameroonian cuisine different. The book teaches that education begins at the kitchen table and provides guidance on how to have conversations with children about diversity so they understand that differences add value to society. It uses examples like children from different countries and religions meeting in a classroom and learning to focus on commonalities rather than conflicts, helping them build more collegial relationships despite their differences.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing nursing is the privilege of caring for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Nursing is something I would choose a million times over because it allows me to connect with people at a human level, beyond their diagnosis, condition, or circumstance.

I love seeing patients make progress, regain strength, find hope, and experience positive outcomes. There is something deeply humbling and fulfilling about walking alongside patients and families during difficult seasons and then seeing them come through with greater confidence, healing, or peace of mind. Those moments remind me why I chose this profession.

As both a nurse and a caregiver, I have learned that caring for others is not only about clinical skill; it is also about presence, compassion, listening, advocacy, and honoring the dignity of each person. Whether I am caring for a patient, supporting a family, or leading a healthcare team, my greatest joy comes from knowing that I made someone feel seen, heard, safe, and cared for.

To me, nursing is more than a profession. It is a calling, a ministry of service, and one of the most meaningful ways to touch lives.
