What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
I love the people. I love seeing a person be healed. What really inspires me is when somebody comes in with high blood pressure, hypertension, or diabetes, and I get to see their progress over time. If they come in with a blood sugar or hemoglobin A1C over 9, and it comes down to a 6 or something, I feel that we've accomplished that because we stayed with the course. I always try to teach - if somebody comes in with high blood sugar, I give them what we call a purple plate that tells them how to eat, how to exercise, and how to drink their water. When we see these results coming back down every 3 months, it's a smile on my face. When they're doing better, everything is improving, they don't have the puffy ankles anymore, their feet aren't swollen, they're walking when they couldn't hardly walk before, getting out of breath when they first started and now they can walk and almost do a marathon - that's what inspires me to do the best I can. That's my goal, to see people improve in their health.
