What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is the detective work - working with facts rather than just plausibilities. A lot of the answers come from the way you get your information from your physical exam or your history from the patient. I particularly love geriatrics because you spend more time with fewer patients and you go into a lot more details. You also get to deprescribe and simplify things for patients. Even though there are specific guidelines you need to follow, you have to customize care for each patient. The older a person gets, you try to focus more on quality of life rather than aggressively going after a number - you want to look at the big picture. I also value that my current position allows me to stay on my toes and not turn into a dinosaur, because I'm always with students, so I have to keep reading up on the guidelines and doing assessments.
