Daniel Brynien, MD

Dan Brynien, MD, is an early-career general surgeon based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, currently practicing as a locum tenens surgeon with Weatherby Locums. He provides surgical coverage across diverse hospital settings, with a focus on delivering reliable, hands-on care in smaller and varied clinical environments. Board-eligible in general surgery, Dan is preparing to sit for his boards and is building a practice grounded in adaptability, technical skill, and patient-centered decision-making.
Dan completed his general surgery residency at Allegheny Health Network, where he also served as Quality Control Chief Resident during the 2024–2025 academic year. In this role, he led the compilation and analysis of complications across services and organized weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, contributing to quality improvement and surgical education. Earlier in his training, he completed a surgical residency year at the University of Maryland Medical Center and gained extensive research experience at UPMC’s Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His research background includes clinical outcomes studies in benign esophageal disease, investigations into oncologic outcomes, and collaborative immunology research, with hands-on experience in immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.
Dan earned his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the University of Pittsburgh. His professional interests center on “bread-and-butter” general surgery, emergency general surgery, and endoscopic procedures, drawn to the immediacy and problem-solving nature of surgical care. He attributes his development and success to the strong mentorship he received throughout training and encourages the next generation of surgeons to seek out mentors who challenge, support, and shape their growth both technically and professionally.
