Conroy C. Smith

Conroy Smith is an aspiring social worker and undergraduate student at the University of California, Merced, with a passion for behavioral health and research. He currently serves as an intern with Merced County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services in the Substance Use Disorders division, gaining hands-on experience supporting individuals navigating mental health and substance use challenges.

In parallel with his clinical work, Conroy is a research assistant in UC Merced’s Stress and Health Lab, where he investigates the effects of vicarious discrimination on sleep health. His research focuses on how exposure to racially-motivated content on social media—particularly rapid-scrolling formats like Reels—can disrupt sleep patterns, contributing to nightmares, nighttime awakenings, and reduced total sleep. Through this work, Conroy bridges practical behavioral health interventions with evidence-based research insights.

Conroy’s professional philosophy emphasizes the integration of research and practice to address mental health challenges in innovative ways. He is particularly interested in exploring alternative therapeutic approaches that empower individuals to manage stress, trauma, and behavioral health concerns more effectively.

Outside of his internship and research, Conroy is actively involved in student leadership and mental health advocacy. He serves as Vice President of UC Merced PsyChi and Vice President of the Psychology Club, supporting peer engagement, educational programming, and community outreach initiatives on campus.

Looking ahead, Conroy aims to deepen his expertise in mental health care, expand his research on the psychological impacts of social media, and develop strategies to mitigate its negative effects on sleep and well-being. His combined focus on clinical practice, research, and leadership positions him to contribute meaningfully to the evolving field of behavioral health.
