Conrad Bonilla, MSN, PMHNP-BC, RN, EMT
Conrad Bonilla, MSN, PMHNP-BC, RN, EMT, is a dedicated Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Medicine Enthusiast, and advocate for holistic, trauma-informed care at the frontlines. Based in Los Angeles County, he is affiliated with both MLK Community Hospital and Huntington Hospital, where he delivers compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric and emergency care. At MLK Community Hospital, Conrad plays a pivotal role in developing the hospital’s groundbreaking EMPATH Unit (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing)—an innovative model integrating psychiatry and emergency medicine to create a therapeutic, dignity-centered environment for individuals in crisis. His leadership in this initiative underscores his mission to transform emergency psychiatric care through compassion, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
Before entering nursing, Conrad spent over 15 years in law enforcement and public safety, where he developed the ability to remain calm, decisive, and empathetic under pressure. His transition to healthcare began with training as an EMT, respiratory therapist, and registered nurse, ultimately discovering his passion for psychiatry and emergency medicine. From psychiatric intensive care to correctional health services, Conrad has consistently sought opportunities to serve in challenging environments, helping patients stabilize during acute crises while addressing the deeper psychosocial factors influencing long-term recovery.
Conrad earned his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health (PMHNP) from West Coast University, completing over 500 clinical hours across inpatient psychiatry, outpatient behavioral health, and telepsychiatry settings. His clinical philosophy emphasizes functional psychiatric medicine, integrating holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally competent approaches that promote sustainable healing. Outside of his professional practice, Conrad remains passionate about physical fitness and mentorship—believing that resilience, compassion, and strength of body and mind are essential to both personal and professional growth. His journey from law enforcement officer to advanced psychiatric practitioner reflects an enduring commitment to serve, protect, and heal through empathy and evidence-based care.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
The most rewarding aspect of my practice lies in helping individuals optimize their mental health to enhance resilience, productivity, and overall quality of life. Human experience is marked by inevitable challenges, and everyone faces moments of hardship and adversity. My role is to guide patients in rediscovering their inner strength, equipping them with the tools to recover, adapt, and continue moving forward with renewed purpose and stability. Witnessing that transformation is the greatest privilege.
