With 22 years of experience as a pharmacist and over 20 years in compounding, he is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and medication quality. Christopher has been with University Hospital for approximately two and a half years, specializing in preparing medications administered directly into the venous system and intrathecally, with strict sterile technique and environmental controls to prevent infection. His work involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimize pharmaceutical care and support patient-centered outcomes. Christopher began his career in 2003 after earning his Doctor of Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina, starting as a nuclear pharmacist with Cardinal Health Nuclear Pharmacy Services for about 10 years. He then gained experience in retail pharmacy before transitioning to hospital sterile compounding in early 2019. Throughout his career, he has earned Board Certification as a Sterile Compounding Pharmacist (BCSCP) and previously educated over 100 pharmacy students in the last two years and frequently presents on sterile compounding topics. His professional contributions include lectures for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP) annual meeting, and internal presentations at Duke University Hospital. He is passionate about training the next generation of pharmacists, promoting a culture of safety, and advancing sterile compounding practices that protect patient health.

I have contributed to several educational articles and professional presentations focused on medication safety, regulatory compliance, and radiopharmaceutical practice. In July 2024, I presented an ASHP webinar titled Promoting a Culture of Safety with the Use of Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents: What Pharmacists Need to Know, which reviewed the safety, efficacy, stability, and clinical considerations of commercially available GBCAs to support informed formulary decision-making. In June 2023, I presented the 2023 Update: USP <795>, <797>, <800>, and <825> at the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP) Annual Meeting in Beaufort, NC. My earlier work includes Preparing for USP <825> Compliance: Cleanrooms and Compounding, published in Pharmacy Purchasing & Products (October 2022), and USP <825>: Radiopharmaceutical Compounding Finally Gets a Chapter of Its Own, presented at the 2022 ASHP Summer Meeting and Exhibitions in Phoenix, AZ, which provided ACPE-accredited continuing education for pharmacists. Both of these USP <825> works were co-authored by Kevin N Hansen, PharmD, MS, BCSCP, Senior Director, Pharmacy Compounding Services with Premier, Inc.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I enjoy the pure practice of compounding. When I fully engage in sterile compounding, I can get lost in all the intricacies and details of the "recipes" used to successful making a compounded sterile preparation (CSP). Its comparison is like getting lost in an enjoyable activity, such as a favored sport, or in an activity like cooking or baking. I also enjoy using my influence to build others up. I believe in servant leadership, where I am looking for opportunities to help others. It might be as simple as a "Thank you" for doing a good job, being a good listener when a coworker has a concern, or looking for job opportunities for other pharmacists. For example, my friend Benjamin Tetteh is a fourth-year pharmacy student at UNC-CH, and was actively looking for a career upon graduating as a nuclear pharmacist. A recruiter saw my profile on LinkedIn, and asked if I would like a job as a pharmacy manager at one of their nuclear pharmacy locations. Even though I declined, I did suggest Benjamin as an excellent candidate for their company. Benjamin just signed up with them, and will be starting his career at one of their pharmacies in Florida in May.
