Dr. Carla R. Lamb, M.D., FCCP, is a board-certified pulmonologist and interventional pulmonologist at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts, where she has served on staff since 2002. She is the director of Interventional Pulmonology, co-director and co-founder of the Lahey Clinic Multi-Disciplinary Thoracic Oncology Center, and the fellowship program director for interventional pulmonology. Dr. Lamb specializes in the early detection, diagnosis, and minimally invasive treatment of thoracic diseases, including lung cancer and pulmonary nodules, using advanced techniques such as robotic bronchoscopy navigation and CT lung screening. Her work spans from preventive care to complex therapeutic interventions, reflecting her commitment to comprehensive patient-centered care. Dr. Lamb completed her medical degree at East Tennessee State University and underwent her internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, where she also served as an attending physician on active duty. She then completed a fellowship in interventional pulmonology at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, becoming one of the first women in the United States to complete a formal interventional pulmonology fellowship. Over her career, she has participated in numerous clinical research projects, focusing on minimally invasive diagnostics, bronchial thermoplasty for asthma, comparative treatments for malignant pleural effusions, and the early detection of lung cancer using biomarker technology in collaboration with institutions such as MIT. She is an expert in simulation education in bronchoscopy and has developed a number of validated assessment tools. A recognized leader in her field, Dr. Lamb serves as President of the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (AABIP) and is co-founder of Women in Interventional Pulmonology (WiIP). She has held multiple national and international leadership positions, contributing to guideline development, fellowship education, and the advancement of interventional pulmonology. Dr. Lamb is also a dedicated mentor, actively fostering opportunities for women and early-career clinicians in her specialty. Her work has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, textbook chapters, and policy statements, cementing her reputation as an internationally respected educator, researcher, and clinician.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I enjoy the ability to offer patients comprehensive options for care, from early detection to advanced therapeutic procedures. Interventional pulmonology allows me to perform minimally invasive procedures that directly impact patient outcomes, whether diagnosing small lung nodules or treating thoracic malignancies. It is deeply rewarding to see the tangible difference these procedures make in a patient’s life.
