Cameron M. Schroeder, OD
Dr. Cameron M. Schroeder is a dedicated medical optometrist practicing at Eye Center South in Dothan. After earning his Doctor of Optometry degree from University of Missouri–St. Louis in fall 2024, Dr. Schroeder quickly established himself in the field of medical optometry, focusing on complex eye conditions rather than traditional vision care. His work includes treating glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, and neuro-optometry cases, as well as providing post-operative care for cataract surgery patients and managing emergency eye cases. Through his patient-centered approach, he is helping redefine the role of medical optometrists within modern healthcare.
Driven by a vision to bridge the gap between traditional optometry and ophthalmology, Dr. Schroeder is pioneering a unique niche within the profession. He believes medical optometrists can play a larger role in advanced eye care and sees the specialty evolving nationally in a way similar to the distinction between physician assistants and nurse practitioners in broader medicine. Passionate about the science of vision, he is particularly fascinated by the visual system and often emphasizes that nearly half of the brain’s capacity is devoted to processing visual information. His innovative mindset and commitment to expanding patient access to specialized eye care continue to shape his growing career.
Before entering the medical field, Dr. Schroeder was a competitive collegiate athlete at Western Illinois University, where he ran track and cross-country. Training at an elite level, he routinely logged 80 miles per week and completed daily runs ranging from 13 to 15 miles. He credits athletics with instilling the discipline, endurance, and competitive mindset that now define his professional approach. Choosing optometry allowed him to fulfill his goal of becoming a doctor while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance and prioritizing time with family. Today, Dr. Schroeder combines clinical excellence with a strong sense of purpose, bringing both compassion and determination to every patient interaction.
