Dr. Brent A. Reinheimer, MD
Dr. Brent A. Reinheimer is a retired internal medicine physician, educator, and published medical author who dedicated more than two decades to hospital-based medicine before a life-altering accident permanently ended his clinical career. Best known for his work as a nocturnist physician, he specialized in managing complex inpatient cases and acute medical emergencies during overnight hospital operations. Throughout his career, Dr. Reinheimer became recognized for his leadership, clinical versatility, and commitment to collaborative patient care, grounded in his belief that every healthcare professional plays an equally vital role in healing and recovery.
Dr. Reinheimer earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-Medicine from Widener University, where he was a four-year varsity volleyball player and two-time co-captain while actively participating in Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 1998, serving as a tutor and teaching assistant in gross anatomy, microbiology, and neuroscience, as well as a member of the student government association. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Jersey City Medical Center through the Mount Sinai School of Medicine program, where he also served as a Committee of Interns and Residents representative.
Over the course of his medical career, Dr. Reinheimer held multiple hospitalist and nocturnist positions across the United States, including Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey; Sterling Health Services; and VISTA Staffing Solutions, where he provided care to underserved populations, including Native American communities. His longest tenure was at Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire, where he served from 2006 to 2013 as a nocturnist responsible for admitting medical emergencies, managing inpatient decompensations, leading code responses, performing procedures, and coordinating overnight hospital operations. He also served as Associate Chief of Physician Relations, helping oversee specialist coordination, ICU collaboration, and hospital coverage agreements.
Beyond clinical medicine, Dr. Reinheimer made significant contributions to medical education as the author of the widely used board review resource USMLE Step 1 Recall: Buzzwords for the Boards, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and released in multiple editions. Written during his medical school years, the book became a best-selling study guide for aspiring physicians preparing for licensing examinations. He further supported medical education through lecturing and teaching board review courses in subjects including anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroscience, mentoring students and young physicians throughout his career.
In January 2014, Dr. Reinheimer survived a near-fatal automobile accident that resulted in permanent disability, including multiple spinal fractures and a broken pelvis, leading him to voluntarily rescind his medical license. Despite this profound transition, he remains deeply committed to service through lecturing, teaching, volunteering, and mentoring whenever possible. Outside of medicine, he enjoys building two-stroke gas bicycles and refurbishing pedal bikes, channeling the same precision and dedication that defined his medical career. Guided by resilience, gratitude, and optimism, Dr. Reinheimer continues to inspire others through his enduring philosophy: stay positive and aloha always.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
I’ve always found the most fulfillment in working closely with my patients and my team to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Being a nocturnist, where I was often the only doctor in the hospital overnight, I relied heavily on collaboration and communication. The moments when we successfully managed a critical situation together were the most rewarding and reminded me why I chose this profession.
