Registered Nurse / Nurse Case Manager
STARS Behavioral Health Group
San Jose, CA

Brandi Sierra is a dedicated registered nurse with 15 years of experience, specializing in psychiatric mental health nursing in community-based settings. She earned her Associate’s degree in Nursing from the College of San Mateo in 2011 and is currently enrolled in Walden University’s Accelerate Into Masters (AIM) program, where she is pursuing her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with an anticipated completion in 2027. Brandi has built a career centered on advocacy, care coordination, and direct patient support, with a particular focus on underserved populations.

Currently, Brandi works at STARS Behavioral Health Group in San Jose, California, where she serves as a nurse case manager at the Starlight clinic within an ACT-based Full Service Partnership (FSP) program. In this role, she provides comprehensive care coordination for clients, assisting with psychiatric care, primary care, dental needs, and budgeting support. Her community-based approach allows her to spend meaningful time with clients, attending appointments and advocating for optimal treatment, such as adjusting diabetic care plans to ensure better health outcomes.

Before joining STARS, Brandi spent a decade at Telecare Corporation, where she gained extensive experience in ACT programs and outpatient mental health nursing. Her hands-on experience in the field strengthened her ability to address both psychiatric and physical health needs, preparing her for her current leadership in care management. Brandi’s practice reflects her belief that meaningful nursing extends beyond the clinic walls, emphasizing advocacy, education, and patient empowerment.

Brandi’s passion for nursing was inspired in childhood when her mother read her the book Nikki Goes to the Doctor, sparking an early interest in healthcare. She chose nursing over medicine because she values the opportunity nurses have to spend time building trust and providing guidance to patients. Her personal motivation is grounded in her family, particularly her late parents who emphasized education, and her 12-year-old son, who continues to inspire her dedication to improving the lives of others.

Looking ahead, Brandi plans to become a nurse practitioner, focusing on providing primary medical care to populations with mental health challenges. Her career is driven by a commitment to holistic, patient-centered care and a desire to advocate for those who often face barriers to healthcare access. Brandi’s combination of clinical expertise, community focus, and academic pursuit positions her as a compassionate leader in psychiatric mental health nursing.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing nursing is being part of a multidisciplinary team. I love collaborating with professionals from different specialties, as we each bring unique skills and perspectives to provide the best care for our clients. I especially value the ability to dedicate meaningful time to each client. In my community-based program, if a client has a two-hour appointment, I can accompany and support them throughout, ensuring they receive the guidance and advocacy they need. This level of engagement is far more fulfilling than the limited time interactions that hospital-based care often allows, and it is something I truly cherish about my work.
