Benjamin Kuhn, DO

Pediatrics | Pediatric Gastroenterology
Professor and Division Chief
MUSC Children's Health
North Charleston, SC 29406

Dr. Benjamin R. Kuhn, DO, is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist with 18 years of experience, currently serving as Professor and Division Chief at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, a role he has held for four years. He specializes in eosinophilic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, with a particular focus on eosinophilic esophagitis, a food allergy–related condition. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Dr. Kuhn practiced there for the first 45 years of his career before relocating to South Carolina to lead the pediatric GI division at MUSC. His interest in gastroenterology stems from the complexity of the GI tract—a hollow tube running from mouth to anus—where the body carefully regulates absorption and excretion, and disruptions can have significant health consequences.

Dr. Kuhn is recognized for his exceptional ability to build and grow medical teams. When he arrived at MUSC, the state’s primary academic medical system had only two pediatric GI physicians despite significant unmet need. Under his leadership, the program has expanded to 13 pediatric GI physicians and six nurse practitioners, dramatically increasing access to specialized care for children in South Carolina. He is also the director of the MUSC Children’s Health Center for Eosinophilic Disorders, a program dedicated to advancing clinical care, education, and research in eosinophilic GI diseases. Dr. Kuhn has authored the NASPGHAN board review textbook chapter on eosinophilic esophagitis and published numerous research papers in his field.

Beyond his clinical and academic contributions, Dr. Kuhn provides consulting and lecturing services for pharmaceutical companies and has been recognized for outstanding patient satisfaction, consistently ranking in the top national percentiles on Press Ganey surveys. He works closely with families at MUSC Children’s Health GI & Nutrition clinics in North Charleston and Mount Pleasant, providing comprehensive care for children with complex gastrointestinal and nutritional conditions. His dedication to patient care, team building, and advancing pediatric gastroenterology has made him a respected leader in his specialty.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I really enjoy most about practicing medicine is helping other people succeed. The selfish part of it is that when I help others succeed, it makes me feel like I'm doing a good job too, but what really makes me smile is when I can recruit people here and help make them successful. I find the most value in building teams - that's honestly where I spend most of my time and what I'm good at. When our team can adequately improve the health of everyone seeking care, that will make me feel fulfilled and accomplished.
