Arleen Torres-Rivera, LMHC

Arleen Torres-Rivera is a bilingual Licensed Mental Health Counselor dedicated to helping children, teens, and families feel seen, understood, and supported through life’s challenges. Originally from Caguas, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2008 before relocating to Florida in 2009 to continue pursuing her passion for mental health care. In 2010, she completed her master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling, and in May 2023, she achieved another important milestone by earning her Mental Health Counselor license. With more than 13 years of experience in nonprofit and outpatient settings, Torres-Rivera has built a career rooted in compassion, cultural understanding, and meaningful connection with the families she serves.

Driven by a desire to address the growing mental health needs within her community, Torres-Rivera founded Belief Counseling in 2023. Her vision for the practice was shaped by her recognition that many bilingual families struggle to find mental health providers who can effectively communicate with both children and parents in their preferred language. By offering services in both English and Spanish, she has created an inclusive environment where families feel heard and respected. She believes that effective therapy goes beyond providing coping strategies for anxiety or depression—it requires building genuine human connection and ensuring every client feels valued rather than treated as just another appointment on a schedule.

Torres-Rivera specializes in working with children, adolescents, and families using evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and MATCH training, a comprehensive counseling framework designed to address anxiety, depression, trauma, and behavioral challenges. Her expertise extends to supporting families navigating ADHD, oppositional behaviors, parenting struggles, and school-related difficulties. Known for her nurturing and empathetic approach, she focuses on helping clients better understand their emotions, recognize how behaviors impact others, and develop healthier coping mechanisms and communication skills. Her work is centered on empowering individuals and families to make meaningful, lasting progress together.

As both a clinician and practice owner, Torres-Rivera embraces every aspect of her work with passion and purpose, from counseling and advocacy to answering phones and managing operations. She remains deeply committed to creating a supportive space not only for her clients, but also for the clinicians within her practice, encouraging each team member to pursue the populations and causes they feel most called to serve. Through her dedication to culturally responsive care, emotional healing, and community support, Torres-Rivera continues working toward her mission of changing the mental health system one family at a time.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I'm most passionate about is working with kids and teens, especially because I'm a mother of two and one of my children has ADHD. Seeing how schools and teachers target kids, saying 'you need to medicate your kid because he cannot stay still' - that really raised a concern for me. My own son is 18 now, graduating with honors next week as a senior, and he never had medication because I worked with him, sat down with him, helped him work on a routine, and stayed consistent as a parent. That's what I try to transmit to other parents who come in frustrated, thinking 'what did I bring to the world?' I tell them, no, you brought a wonderful kid - you don't have to have second thoughts about that. Not every kid is going to be a doctor or pursue what society expects. They're going to pursue their own dreams and careers, what they feel passionate about. My own kid wants to be an entrepreneur and a chef, and he makes amazing cookies. Helping parents find strategies at home and not get frustrated, helping them understand that their kids have the right to move, to laugh, to be kids - that's what drives me. I want to help families see that it's not about medication for every child who can't sit still for eight hours a day.
