Anjanette M. DeVito
Anjanette DeVito is a Nurse Manager with 34 years of nursing experience, currently serving within the County of Santa Clara Health System in San Jose, California. She has dedicated her career to serving safety-net populations, including underinsured, uninsured, unhoused, and low-income individuals, through county hospital and clinic systems that provide care regardless of insurance status. She has known she wanted to be a nurse since childhood, writing in her preschool book “I want to be a nurse when I grow up,” and has carried that lifelong calling into a career grounded in both leadership and direct patient care. While she now manages clinical operations, she remains committed to hands-on nursing and maintains her clinical skills to ensure she can step in whenever needed to support patient care.
She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio University Nursing Program, completing her master’s in leadership and informatics in 2022. She also holds a public health nursing certificate and a California state teaching credential for school nursing, which she obtained as a professional safeguard in response to potential workforce and funding shifts. Her professional affiliations include Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, American Nurses Association, Infusion Nurses Society, Association of Nurses and AIDS Care, and the International Society on Addiction Medicine, reflecting her deep commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice in nursing and public health.
Throughout her career, Anjanette has developed expertise in public health, community health, and addiction medicine, including early work in the 1990s caring for HIV-positive patients with co-occurring substance use disorders. She is known for her collaborative, patient-centered philosophy and her willingness to take initiative, often choosing to say yes when others may hesitate while thoughtfully working through challenges to find solutions. She believes strongly in being fully invested in her patients and teams, balancing leadership responsibilities with a continued passion for direct care. Her approach combines flexibility, accountability, and compassion, with a focus on improving outcomes for some of the most vulnerable populations in her community.

I co-authored a journal article in 2016 on the use of naltrexone for substance use disorder, which was published in the American Journal of Medicine. Beyond my own writing, I regularly read the American Nurses Association monthly journal and follow articles from the Nurses Association for Addiction Medicine, particularly those that are pertinent to what we're doing in practice - things that might be helpful, might change how we practice, or that we can talk to our primary physicians about.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
I really love hands-on work and working directly with patients. I like leadership stuff too, but I really, really like working with patients. Even though I'm in a management role now, I make it a point to keep my clinical skills up because I want to use them as much as I can. On any given day, we might have somebody out sick, and I have to be able to cover as needed. It's important to me to stay connected to patient care - that's where my heart is.
