Andrew King, Emeritus Professor at LSU Health Science Center, is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon and educator whose career spans more than four decades. Dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of spine and scoliosis disorders in both children and adults, Dr. King served on the faculty of the LSU Department of Orthopedic Surgery and maintained clinical affiliations with New Orleans Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center, earning recognition for clinical expertise, compassionate patient care, and contributions to advancing orthopedic practice. Dr. King’s medical journey began at the University of Otago Medical School in New Zealand, where the MB ChB in Medicine was earned. Further specialization was completed through an Orthopedic Surgery Residency with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, achieving the FRACS designation. Following residency, training continued with a Senior Orthopedic Registrar appointment at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopedic Hospital in Exeter, Devon, UK,and a Spine Surgery Fellowship at LSU Health Science Center (New Orleans), focusing on complex spinal deformities and scoliosis. These rigorous training experiences laid the foundation for a career distinguished by technical excellence, innovation, and leadership in orthopedic surgery. During tenure at LSU, Dr. King held the title of G. Dean MacEwen Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and served as Chair of the Department from 2005 to 2015, overseeing faculty practice, resident education, and departmental initiatives. Contributions to the field continue through case consultations, second opinions, and development of innovative surgical devices. In addition to medical achievements, Dr. King serves on the Board of the Friends of Music in Louisiana, reflecting a commitment to community and the arts. The career exemplifies a lifelong dedication to excellence in patient care, surgical innovation, and professional leadership.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I enjoy the challenge and responsibility involved in diagnosing and treating medical conditions, both the simple and routine, and the involved and challenging. I enjoy interaction with my patients from all ages and all walks of life .I enjoy working closely within a team of nurses , techs , administrators , premedical product reps to provide seamless top quality care. And I have been privileged to mentor over 250 orthopedic residents , 30 spine and pediatric fellows and countless medical students . I gives great satisfaction to see them progress into successful practice.
