Andrew Campbell, MD
Dr. Andrew Campbell, MD, is the Director of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Northwestern University. Prior to his current role, Dr. Campbell directed the University of Michigan Comprehensive Pediatric Hemoglobinopathies Program and co-directed the Minority Health International Research Training Program at the University of Michigan, focusing on health disparities in child health.
Dr. Campbell’s clinical and research expertise centers on sickle cell disease (SCD) and hemoglobinopathies, with a particular focus on understanding the varied phenotypic expression of SCD in different populations. He leads the multinational Consortium for the Advancement of Sickle Cell Disease Research (CASiRe) and has conducted translational and health outcomes research in Ghana, collaborating with local clinicians and blood bank specialists to improve SCD care and study complications such as kidney disease. He also spearheads the SC Ontology project, an international initiative developing a standardized, web-based resource on SCD phenotypes and management for clinicians worldwide.
Beyond research, Dr. Campbell is deeply committed to education, mentorship, and global health. He has trained medical students, residents, and fellows both in the U.S. and internationally, fostering sustainable capacity-building in under-resourced healthcare settings. At Children’s National, he advances patient care, research, and advocacy for pediatric SCD, promoting access to innovative treatments, including gene therapy, and bridging the gap between pediatric and adult care for young adults living with the disease. His work exemplifies the integration of clinical excellence, research innovation, and global health leadership.
