Amy Stern, APRN-BC, is a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner based in Sarasota, Florida, with more than 25 years of nursing experience across inpatient, primary care, and specialty settings. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through an accelerated program at Loyola University Chicago, following an earlier degree in psychology from Northwestern University. She went on to complete her Master of Science in Nursing in Adult Health Nurse/Nursing at Rush University while working full-time as an oncology registered nurse, building a strong clinical foundation in complex adult and cancer care.

Throughout her advanced practice career, Amy has primarily focused on geriatric and adult primary care, delivering mobile medical services to home-bound patients and residents in assisted living facilities. She held long-term roles in organizations such as Family Home Physicians and Alliance Care, where she independently managed large panels of elderly patients, addressing both chronic and acute conditions while helping to reduce avoidable hospitalizations. Her work has consistently emphasized compassionate communication, patient education, and coordination with interdisciplinary care teams to support high-quality, continuity-based care for older adults.

In more recent years, Amy expanded her clinical expertise into orthopedics and pain management, working with Coastal Orthopedics and Sports Medicine where she collaborated with specialists in spine care and interventional procedures such as joint injections and trigger point therapy. She also has experience in senior healthcare settings across Florida, including Bradenton and Sarasota, and remains committed to patient-centered practice. Currently, she is on medical leave while undergoing treatment for stage IV breast cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center, and continues to explore opportunities to contribute her expertise through remote or flexible nursing roles.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about nursing is the connection with patients and building meaningful relationships. When I worked in geriatric care, I found that the best medicine was often just having someone to talk to. I loved brightening their day and being able to help them with symptom management and chronic illness care. The social aspect and social contact for them was far better than any medicine I was prescribing or specialists I was referring them to. By far, it was the relationship with the patients, seeing patients on a regular basis and getting to know them. Their faces would light up when I came in, and that was the perk, that was the best part.
