Dr. Ameika Bush, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician, cardiology hospitalist, and founder of the Carbon to Diamond Medical Respite and Shelter. She brings nearly 25 years of clinical experience in hospital medicine with a strong emphasis on inpatient cardiovascular care and complex medical management. Dr. Bush practices with the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland, and has dedicated her career to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within acute hospital settings. She earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and completed her residency training at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where she continues to serve as an attending physician.
Dr. Bush has developed a distinctive and deeply rooted focus on hospital medicine with a specialization in nocturnal and off-hour care. She has served as a nocturnist for over two decades, consistently working night shifts, weekends, and holidays in high-acuity environments. Her commitment to this role began early in her training and has remained central throughout her career, reflecting both clinical dedication and a strong sense of purpose in supporting patients during their most vulnerable hours. This mission is profoundly personal, shaped by a traumatic experience at age 17 when she was struck by a vehicle while on vacation, resulting in multiple hospitalizations and surgical interventions. During her recovery, she became acutely aware of the emotional and physical demands placed on night shift healthcare providers, an observation that influenced her lifelong commitment to fostering compassion and empathy in acute care medicine.
Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Bush maintains a deliberate schedule of three nights per week, allowing her to devote significant time to community engagement and service initiatives. She is actively involved in organizing and leading hospital-based outreach efforts, including clothing drives and food distribution programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. Her commitment to addressing health disparities and supporting vulnerable populations ultimately led her to establish the Carbon to Diamond Medical Respite and Shelter, a nonprofit organization grounded in the philosophy that adversity can be transformed into strength and resilience. Through her combined work in clinical care and community advocacy, Dr. Bush exemplifies leadership, compassion, and a sustained dedication to improving outcomes for underserved populations.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is being there for patients during the times when they need compassionate care the most - nights, weekends, and holidays. When I was 17, I was hit by a car while on vacation, and during my multiple hospitalizations and surgeries, I noticed that the people working night shifts were often short-tempered and unhappy because they got stuck with shifts nobody wanted. I realized that whenever I needed help as a patient, the staff would come in with bad attitudes, complaining about having to work those hours. That experience made me determined that if I made it through, I would dedicate myself to working those exact shifts - the ones nobody else wants. I try to make it nice for the patients, especially during holidays. It's my way of being a team player, and I even bring little gifts to patients to cheer them up, because it's horrible to be in the hospital when you should be at home enjoying your family. My lived experience as a patient is what drives me to provide the kind of care I wish I had received during those difficult nights.
