Amber Parker, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, IFMCP

Amber Parker is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with nearly five years of experience in family and functional medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College in Toledo, Ohio in 2016 and her Master of Science in Nursing from Spring Arbor University in 2021. Amber began her nursing career in pediatrics at Mott Children’s Hospital, where she developed a deep commitment to individualized, patient-centered care—a commitment rooted in her personal experiences as a parent. Her passion for nursing and advocacy in healthcare was shaped by her daughter, who was born with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and severe central sleep apnea. Navigating her daughter’s complex care needs inspired Amber to question conventional protocols and advocate for personalized solutions. Her determination helped her daughter achieve significant milestones, including decannulation of her tracheostomy in kindergarten and successful mainstreaming in school. This experience continues to influence Amber’s approach to patient care, emphasizing education, individualized treatment, and holistic solutions. After working in family practice, Amber recognized the limitations of conventional healthcare, particularly the lack of time for patient education in traditional 15-minute appointments. She transitioned to Michigan Department of Corrections in Jackson, Michigan, where she has served for the past four years. There, Amber provides care to a unique population, dedicating the time necessary to educate patients about chronic conditions such as diabetes, and empowering them to take control of their health. Her work emphasizes practical, actionable guidance, building trust and improving health outcomes. In addition to her clinical experience, Amber recently became certified by the Institute of Functional Medicine. She now integrates functional medicine principles into her practice, addressing longevity, lifestyle, mental health, sleep, and nutrition. By taking a whole-person approach, she helps patients optimize their long-term health and quality of life. Amber is also an active member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has been recognized for her excellence in nursing with multiple Daisy Award nominations, including winning the top Daisy Award at Mott Children’s Hospital in 2018. Outside of work, Amber is a dedicated runner preparing for her third marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., honoring her husband, a retired Marine, and her two sons, who are currently serving. She is deeply committed to her family, personal wellness, and community, bringing the same energy, focus, and compassion to her life outside the clinic as she does in her professional practice. Amber’s vision for the future includes opening her own practice focused on longevity and whole-person wellness, helping patients live healthier, longer lives.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about practicing medicine is patient education. I thrive on the ability to spend meaningful time with my patients, helping them understand their health and how to improve it. At the prison where I work, I have the opportunity to go beyond just prescribing medications—I can truly educate someone about managing their diabetes or other chronic conditions. If a patient needs an hour of focused guidance, I can take that time, even if it means seeing them the next day. This kind of hands-on, in-depth education is what conventional medicine often lacks, and it’s what makes my work so rewarding. Helping patients understand their conditions and empowering them to take control of their health is why I love what I do.
