Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most is working with early childhood, specifically that 3 to 6 years old age range. There's a counseling piece to it that really resonates with me. That's when people are first getting their diagnosis, so there's family guidance and explanation that's needed. I love the parenting piece and the family carryover. These kids are just joys - they're the most beautiful age. When you come in anywhere, it's like you're a celebrity. The beauty of an integrated preschool program is having half your students who are tuition-based without identified disabilities, and the other half with identified disabilities, and you put them together and it's just magic because everyone's just who they are. As a speech pathologist in a school, you're engineering the environment and they don't even know it. You're setting up opportunities for students who are really strong at certain skills to engage children who are working on those skills. I might get 10 repetitions of a child trying to respond to their name from a peer, and no one knows it. It took me 11 years to see that I love early childhood - that's the sweet spot for me.
