Alma John is a dedicated registered nurse with seven years of clinical experience, currently practicing at Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas. Her journey into nursing began unexpectedly. Originally interested in economics and statistics, Alma’s path changed after participating in a medical mission trip to India through her church during high school. What began as a volunteer opportunity evolved into a deep passion for healthcare, leading her to remain in India and complete a rigorous four-year direct Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, graduating in 2018. The program’s intensity provided her with extensive clinical experience and a strong foundation in patient care.
Alma’s professional experience spans over three and a half years in neurology, followed by her current work in cardiovascular intensive care. She holds certifications in stroke, neuro, and critical care, demonstrating her commitment to clinical excellence and continuous learning. Alma is also an active member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), staying engaged with best practices and advancements in her field.
Looking ahead, Alma plans to pursue a master’s degree within the next three years. Her professional goals include becoming a highly resourceful and knowledgeable nurse who can support her colleagues, provide relief in high-stress situations, and make meaningful contributions to patient care. What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I love most about my work is being there for patients at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Every day, I see patients at their lowest point—whether it’s someone recovering from a heart transplant, a complex procedure like CABG, or a traumatic brain injury. I get to make meaningful differences, from providing comfort in simple ways, like assisting with basic care, to guiding patients through complex medical situations. Being able to intervene, explain what’s happening, and help them regain a sense of control is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that my actions can directly impact their well-being is what drives me every day.
