Alfreda Dorsey-Ellis is a highly experienced histotechnologist whose career in laboratory medicine spans more than four decades, beginning in 1983. She started her professional journey at just 17 years old working with the U.S. Department of Defense, where she developed a strong foundation in clinical and anatomical pathology. Her early training through U.S. Army medical programs provided extensive hands-on experience in histology, cytology, grossing, and autopsy services, shaping her expertise in diagnostic laboratory science and establishing a lifelong commitment to precision and patient care.

She earned her Associate of Science degree in Histologic Technology from Clover Park Technical College and later completed a Bachelor of Science in Advanced Health Sciences at Kaplan University. Certified as a Histotechnologist (HT ASCPcm), she has built specialized expertise in tissue processing, microtomy, staining techniques, and microscopic slide preparation essential for accurate disease and cancer diagnosis. Throughout her career, she has worked across diverse healthcare systems, including Department of Defense medical facilities, VA Medical Centers, academic hospitals, biotechnology organizations, and major healthcare networks nationwide.

Over the years, she has held leadership and advanced technical roles, including Histology Manager and Anatomical Pathology Supervisor, where she trained pathology residents, laboratory professionals, and military physicians in histotechnology practices. Her reputation for technical excellence led to opportunities to support laboratories internationally, including assignments in Germany and multiple U.S. military and civilian medical centers. Known for her adaptability and depth of knowledge, she has contributed to improving laboratory workflows, maintaining quality standards, and supporting diagnostic teams in high-demand clinical environments.

Currently, she serves as a traveling histotechnologist with Aya Healthcare, providing specialized histology and cytology services to medical facilities across the United States, including remote and underserved locations. Her work focuses on preparing high-quality tissue samples that enable pathologists to diagnose cancer and other diseases accurately. Driven by a passion for challenges and a dedication to advancing laboratory medicine, she continues to play a vital role behind the scenes of modern healthcare, ensuring reliable diagnostic results that directly impact patient outcomes.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is the opportunity to help people in a meaningful way behind the scenes of patient care. In histotechnology, we work directly with tissue samples taken from a patient’s body and carefully process them using specialized techniques and stains. These samples are prepared into extremely thin slides that are examined under the microscope alongside the pathologist to determine whether a condition is cancerous, non-cancerous, or related to another disease process. I am someone who enjoys challenges, which is why anatomical pathology has always been the perfect fit for me. Unlike routine laboratory work, this field allows continuous learning and movement between different areas, providing opportunities to expand my skills and deepen my understanding of diagnostic medicine.
